Communication and Journalism Careers showing signs of Improvment

A survey done by journalism and communication graduates reported that by May 2012 the job market improved from 66 percent to 70 percent in 2013.

The survey was conducted by The University of Georgia’s Grady College of Communication and Journalism. Graduates were asked to indicate how many job offers they have received upon graduation. Study shows graduates with a bachelors degree received more offers and higher salaries than previous years.

Michelle Gutt, communication and journalism graduate from the University of Texas, is surprised how long its taken for the communication job market to improve.

“Although I graduated almost ten years ago I am still very surprised how slow the communications department is improving. I have learned that communication is not something you can just teach someone,” Gutt said.  By working with other people communication skills is one of the most important aspects for any career.”

The survey conducted that nine out of ten 2012 graduates with a bachelor degree will receive at least one job interview. The improvement found from these surveys varied by field. Graduates specializing in news editorial journalism reported an increase in full time jobs while tele communication graduates continue to have the most difficulty in the job market.

Jack Kenadall, current communication student at University of North Carolina at Charlotte has nothing but excitement for the improvements in the job market.

“Im excited to find out what the future has in store with jobs for communication. Especially because my focus in school is for spots broadcasting,” Kendall said. “I hope by the time i graduate in 2016 the job market will improve even more as well as the different technologies that will go along with broadcasting and communication.”

The National Association of College and Employers (NACE) reported the median annual salary for the communication category was $41,550.

According to the survey, graduates with a master degree in the communications field have a significant decrease in job offers from the past year.
